Most of the drivers in Canada are either forgetful or ignorant of the basic skills of driving. This is proven with the creation of "Canada's Worst Driver" (highly recommend viewing, if you haven't yet). Driving is a privilege structured around certain laws and etiquette to make the experience pleasurable and safe for all. And a good percentage of past, current and future drivers will inherit the poor driving habits of their teacher (dad, grandpa, relative, well-meaning friend, etc.) Most licensed persons currently using our roads are not educated through proper course-training (in-class/field), correct information regarding definitions of basic road signs (right of ways, yield/merge, etc.).
Test your own knowledge, just for fun. I dare you. . No I double dare you. Some of the results reached by a few may be surprising. I did this a few years back when I upgraded my license. It was an awakening. And humbling. And I'm thankful everyday that I chose to improve my skills.
Defensive driving courses should also be implemented as a required part of getting your license, no matter what level. To have only a small percentage educated in preventing unnecessary vehicular accidents seems against common sense. To make defense driving mandatory would be a viable solution in the prevention of vehicle accidents in Canada . There plenty of driving schools in Alberta and across Canada that offer defensive driving as part of an already established and accredited course. The certificates acquired upon completion of said courses (Alberta Auto. Insurance Rate Board), could reduce your premium significantly, especially where young drivers are concerned.
Choosing the right course and instructing school, you do need to do a bit of research. Young Drivers is a company who seems to share in my sentiments and offers defensive driving for all ages.With my son's new pleas of wanting his learners' in the near future. This issue has grown into a major source of worry and stress. I as a parent, have to make a complex decision in consideration of his driving capacity, health-wise.(That's another blog.)

Driver: What are you talking about?! I was driving five miles below the limit, wearing my seat belt and checking all my mirrors!
